Topic

Rain City/Dry Summers: Collecting water using permeable surfaces to grow gardens and protect infrastructure

There was a time when we could just run our sprinklers all day, any day to water our lawns and gardens. However, water has become a very scarce and sacred commodity in periods of drought. It is a resource that needs protecting and municipal regulations have restricted how much and how often we can run our sprinklers. Conversely, with new terms like “Atmospheric River” we are seeing wetter winters with peak rainfalls that overwhelm our municipal stormwater systems. There is a way to combine these two issues and collect and store water on site to use either domestically, or release back into the system after peak flooding.  In this hands-on workshop, we will look at alternate ways to collect, store and use water in our gardens and landscapes using hardscape products.
