Many cities are interested in integrating smart-city concepts and technologies in urban planning and management processes, which will likely drive future technological applications and data-driven solutions in urban forestry and green infrastructure planning. Based on research projects taking place at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), this presentation explores various applications and “smart” technologies in urban forestry, arboriculture, and green infrastructure management. I will discuss how urban forests can support liveable, resilient communities, with an emphasis on the new tools, technologies and techniques that we are developing to better monitor and manage tree condition, understand human interactions with trees, and develop integrated approaches to urban forest management.
