The Long Grass Movement: Long Grass Management in Passive Turf Areas

It is a current trend in landscape horticulture to allow passive turf areas to grow long. Initiatives like Now Mow May embrace the ecological benefits of long turf grass that include providing food and habitat for beneficial insects, birds, snakes, and other urban wildlife. Images of wildflower meadows come to mind, but the reality is often not palatable to the general public. How can professionals make this idea work so that it is legible to the average person? Join Egan Davis to explore this question. He will provide visual examples of successful long grass meadows and discuss key elements that make them work. Egan will discuss a range of ideas that include wildflower meadows, long grass management and rotational mowing. Learn how ecological principles of plant succession, plant adaptation strategies, nutrient cycling and competition apply to successful programs.

Living among Medicine - folk remedies from city trees

Ethnobotany defines the interface between people and forests. For tens of thousands of years, traditional cultures have used local plants for food, fibre, and medicine across a variety of regions. As people move around the world, so too do the plants and traditions with which they are connected. We bring plants that enrich our lives to areas we live. Recognizing how communities indigenous to these lands interpreted plants as medicine and hold traditional plant knowledge, today our urban forests represent many different plants from dozens of vibrant cultural traditions. Join Andrew for a survey of our modern urban forest and learn about ethnobotanically important plant species among which we co-exist.

Looking into Trees - a non-invasive look at the cross-section of a tree using Sonic Tomography

Tree risk assessors assess tree risk as accurately and consistently as possible and recommend measures to achieve an acceptable level of risk. However, it is often difficult to determine the location and extent of internal wood decay during most basic assessments. Advanced assessments with decay-detection devices can provide additional information that may make the difference between recommending tree or branch retention or removal. This presentation will introduce the use of two different advanced methods for investigating internal wood decay. The IML PowerDrill is a resistance-record drill which digitally presents the wood quality by measuring the drill’s needle resistance through the core of the wood. The PiCUS Sonic Tomograph is a sonic wood assessment instrument which measures the velocity of sound waves in wood to detect decay and cavities in trees less invasively. This presentation will review the operational theory of these devices, and their applications in assessing internal wood decay with case studies.
